Critical lobby
Kine Per week told you “The fresh new strong ‘crooks slide out’ try peopled with a colourful range regarding crucial and you will arresting emails, and these, skilfully manipulated by author and you will director, let the motion picture so you can tread drinking water effectively. It is merely to your wind up so it begins to break apart, nevertheless smack-up finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero great difficulties within the lifestyle down the very ugly title.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin said “The film movements during the a fast rate, brand new discussion was smooth and you can characterisations basically energetic. Cock Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes lead the fresh new cast expertly, while the detective was used big aplomb of the that person identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody in the New Yorker indexed “So it terse and you will tight flick noir was centered on the romantic and you can top-notch issues of your own term profile, the latest violent genius (played from the Penis Powell) at the rear of a fashionable unlawful casino. New film’s journalist and you will manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess online game, to have mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) worked in the casino and you can old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic script, the new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures out of love and you will menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will smartly assertive photographs (as well as their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a hidden classic of one’s genre.” [ ten ]

Photo have action and you will anticipation, and you can specific quick joins away from jokes to incorporate taste. Adept activities by Knob Powell, as a playing household overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, due to the fact an authorities inspector, in addition to within the rating . Even though the spot employs a familiar development, the fresh new characterizations is actually fresh plus the performances suitable so you can overbalance. Dialogue is terse and relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney reach. Uncommon camera bases come along on occasion to help you intensify attract and you will momentarily stop the interest. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling since the movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand spanking new journalist and associate producer, including helps with making this a silky development.” [ 11 ]
Movie critic Bosley Crowther gave the film a blended opinion, criticizing they to possess slow pacing, writing, “Nevertheless the slowness and you may standard frustration of your own plot for two-thirds of the flick cannot make for notable thrill, while the shallowness of your secret as to who’s got creating every new eliminating alleviates it of every great suspense. Its mostly a question of enjoying Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably when you are a huge shed out of stars and stars render your vintage support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little woman whom brings about the best in him and Ellen Drew is the sleek and you can slinky vixen who gets him on jams. Thomas Gomez is fatty since villain and Lee J. Cobb does a unique able trip as the a tired police inspector whom eventually closes the situation. A great amount of taking and you can puffing is carried out from the all of the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
